CLAY PRINTS

In general, I work with materials that are immediately available and in 2003, I used clay as my base in the traditional art form of printing and applying the techniques of drawing, sculpting and painting with each design.

I first fashioned the clay into a plate of desired size and then drew and sculpted the image into the wet medium and allowed it to harden, but not dry completely, as a relief. I then applied acrylic paint to the relief, as this was all that I did not have printing inks at the time. Then I transferred the image onto damp paper, usually by applying the paper onto the plate with slight pressure. Afterward, each print was hand colored using watercolor. One thing to note: because clay is a porous medium and the combination of applying pressure to the plate to transfer the image and using a water soluble paint to its surface, the results varied, thus creating many individual works from a single image. I was fortunate to get as many prints from the smaller plates as I did. However, I learned that the clay did not hold up for very long with the larger plates.

The first presentation of this printing approach was through a design that I titled Natural Connection that was originally created for the poster project, “Yo! What Happened to Peace” in California. The requirements were that all submissions be 18x24 in (45.7x61cm), and that they be printed by hand (as a silk screen, etching or lithography).

With Natural Connection, I produced 20 prints in total. One is in the permanent collection of the Transport Gallery in California in 2004.

Natural Connection was the largest of the group, but from then on, I created 18 different designs; thirteen of the designs are shown below. One of the 18 was designed for an arts-promotional group called The House That We Built and the rest donated to the ART for AIDS silent auction to benefit Housing Works/ presented by UBS, October 26, 2005.

GROUP 1 These two designs created for very specific purposes. One was created as a poster for a peace project at the Transport Gallery in California; edition of only 14. The other was created for an online artist group called The House That We Built.com; only 19 created before the plate broke.

GROUP 2 (three images) I created four designs, printing until I had at least fifty of each. I put the fourth of the four designs into its own group because as I printed from it, the design seemed to have morphed into two more images.
